Deer Park is a relatively small but elegant early Georgian gentleman’s residence set in 80 acres of the Devonshire countryside. Childs Sulzmann Architects were appointed to create a generous space on the side of the hotel to host weddings and other events.

Previously, a temporary structure in its grounds was being used as a venue to host weddings and other events as it was considered planning approval to build additional permanent facilities would not be granted in such a sensitive and historic location.

Using their expertise in both hospitality and heritage buildings, and following careful negotiations with the local authority, Childs Sulzmann designed a traditional style orangery, matching the period architecture of the existing buildings, to provide a permanent function room and wedding venue.

The scheme cleverly uses modern pre-fabricated timber construction techniques, ensuring a short construction programme was achievable and allowing the venue to be opened in time for the start of the wedding season.

The result is an elegant yet grand function and event space which offers all of the modern requirements whilst blending effortlessly into the historic setting.
